Fashion Illustrator Inspiration - Rodger Duncan

Rodger Duncan was a well known illustrator, mostly known for his work published in American Vogue during the 1980's. He was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Rodger studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Arts and later received a Masters degree after studying painting in Florence, Italy.
He worked for many famous designers during his lifetime including - Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Stephen Jones, Patrick Kelly, Caroline Henara and Anne Klein. His work has been published in some of the worlds most famous fashion magazines including - American Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and New York Magazine.
During his time as a fashion illustrator Rodger was known for working at super fast speeds and always working with a live model. He once said "The model is the drawing, I am attracted to fashion illustration  as a form of personal expression, interpreting the mood of the model according to what she is wearing. She is a young, active woman, her gestures and movements inspire me and because I work so fast, she can always be caught in motion".
Rodger liked to use gouache colors whilst working in dynamic and fluid brushstrokes. His work loosely reflected fashion illustrations of the 1940s.

To me, Rodgers work is simple and elegant and I love the loose, rough effect it has. Although there isn't much detail in his illustrations he still manages to create movement and style with the garments. I also love his use of a simple black gouache with a hint of colour here and there.
Unfortunately Rodger Duncan died in the late 1980s, but his work will live on to inspire us for many years.
